Academies and Prisons

Academies and prisons are completely opposite and without any points of contact; people who seem to have nothing in common. As part of our project, we created a meeting space by inviting academics and artists to work with prisoners. Over 100 cultural education, art and creative activities have been conducted for people in five prisons in Poland!

The classes were run by artists, art curators and academic teachers from the University of Arts in Poznań, Nicolaus Copernicus University (Faculty of Fine Arts), Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, the Museum of Modern Art and the National Museum in Warsaw. Topics varied from the origins of art to contemporary times. Lectures, talks, presentations, media, interior design and theatre workshops took place in various prisons. From May to June 2016, we worked together with more than 100 inmates in prisons in the Detention Centre in Poznań, Toruń, Warsaw Gochów and Białołęka, and the Penitentiary Institution No. 1 in Grudziądz. Media patronage was provided by Radio TOK FM. The project has been co-financed by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage.
