About us

Culture, art and education are the three pillars of Fundacja Dom Kultury.

Since 2007, Fundacja Dom Kultury has been conducting socially engaging activities, using art, culture and education as tools for bringing people back to society. It involves artists, cultural creators, social activists, and educators in activities for people who are socially excluded for various reasons.

Fundacja Dom Kultury runs artistic and cultural education workshops for young people from educational institutions, prisoners, ethnic and cultural minorities, children with problematic backgrounds, seniors, and anyone who needs them. It helps people to be active on a cultural, artistic, social and professional level. It brings art and culture to places where it does not exist.

Fundacja Dom Kultury provides equal opportunities in universal access to art, culture, and education.

The most important activities of Fundacja Dom Kultury are "eWKratke" and the "Culture Under Lock and Key" programme.

eWKratke is a blog run by Fundacja Dom Kultury since 2014. It is created by women serving prison sentences at the Detention Centre in Warsaw Grochów. The blog runs despite the prisoners having no access to the internet. It exists thanks to the hard work of our foundation’s dedicated volunteers. The Foundation runs cultural education classes for the bloggers twice a week, so that the blog can operate.

"Culture Under Lock and Key" is a programme that has been running continuously since 2011, in the form of various sub-projects in women's prison at the Warsaw Grochów Detention Centre and short-term projects in other prisons in Poland. Together with artists, art curators and academic teachers, our Foundation has conducted over 300 artistic and cultural workshops in nine prisons.

In the past 10 years of our activity, we have gained the conviction that culture and art have a causative power. They have a positive impact on every person, regardless of their origin, status, age and life situation.

Academies and Prisons

Academies and prisons are completely opposite and without any points of contact; people who seem to have nothing in common. As part of our project, we created a meeting space by inviting academics and artists to work with prisoners. Over 100 cultural education, art and creative activities have been conducted for people in five prisons in Poland!

The classes were run by artists, art curators and academic teachers from the University of Arts in Poznań, Nicolaus Copernicus University (Faculty of Fine Arts), Academy of Fine Arts in Warsaw, the Museum of Modern Art and the National Museum in Warsaw. Topics varied from the origins of art to contemporary times. Lectures, talks, presentations, media, interior design and theatre workshops took place in various prisons. From May to June 2016, we worked together with more than 100 inmates in prisons in the Detention Centre in Poznań, Toruń, Warsaw Gochów and Białołęka, and the Penitentiary Institution No. 1 in Grudziądz. Media patronage was provided by Radio TOK FM. The project has been co-financed by the Ministry of Culture and National Heritage.

Minorities

Multicultural education in the form of workshops or cultural and artistic events for the general audience. We invited representatives of selected minorities, who will introduce their culture in the form of a lecture, presentation or music. These events were accompanied by art workshops, games and interactions and were always adjusted to the age of the recipient. So far we have conducted workshops on Arabic, African, Brazilian, Bulgarian, Chechen, Japanese, Lebanese, Mexican, Armenian, Palestinian, Roma, Scandinavian, Syrian, Turkish, Tibetan and Jewish cultures.

Very important activities of our Foundation are non-formal education classes, which we’ve been conducting since the beginning of our existence in kindergartens and schools of all levels in Warsaw and in the Mazovia region. These are multicultural workshops and classes dedicated to anti-discrimination, cultural and artistic education, universal design and new media. We have carried out over 1000 workshops!

Prisoners – education

We have been active in prisons since 2011. We carry out cultural and social education under agreements with the Regional Inspectorate of Prison Service in Warsaw, Detention Facilities in Warsaw Grochów and Warsaw Białołęka. We have completed hundreds of hours of cultural re-adaptation and education classes, involving people in prison in cultural and social life. At the Warsaw Grochów Detention Centre, we run a programme called "I write, therefore I am", as part of which we mostly organise meetings for a group of female inmates on a voluntary basis. Since 2016, we have been publishing a blog that is a result of these meetings.

Edukacja – wpis główny

We conduct cultural and social education workshops in schools of all levels as well as outside of schools - wherever there is a need for such activities. Since 2011, we have been organising two classes a week in a women's prison in Warsaw Grochów. We also run extensive projects aimed at the Roma community and young people from Youth Education Centres.
